Invasives Are Our New Neighbors. What Now?

Fish jumping into boats. The American chestnut tree, blighted into dust. These are the stories that often jolt through the USA’s mind when the term “invasive species” is heard. Throughout our nation’s history, the tread of human boots has brought along with them various types of friendly and unfriendly species. Ecosystems are easily exposed against new unknown intruders. The government’s response is a desperate attempt to quarantine, search, and employ eradication tactics for even the few fugitives that could burst into an uncontrollable swarm. Many habitats, from forests to deserts, have endured decades of invasive establishment. Invasive species are evolving to better suit these habitats after many years without significant pushback. Locals are overwhelmed in numbers, and invasives even develop resistance to culling actions. Researchers have seen the terrifying ability for these traits to build quickly. Insects have developed resistance to synthetic insecticides, increasing costs and decrease in efficacy. But there have been successes. These are typically on islands. On islands, removing invasive vertebrates from 1872 to 2020 had a success rate of 88%. But not every location can enjoy the isolation that allows for such impressive results. Therefore we must come to terms with a hard truth; many invasives can no longer be removed.

However, their evolving traits give hope invasives could benefit native species or allow for coexistence. By publicly acknowledging that not all species will be feasibly eradicated, we must change the conversation on invasive threats. This must be done by telling the public which are not possible to remove, and that for the public action is mostly about preventing a new introduction. We also need to remove our anthropocentric view on what even is defined as invasive. A clear definition is that non-native means the species is foreign yet harmless, while invasive means the local ecosystem is negatively impacted. This terminology change could be a potential solution, removing the negative connotations.

Invasive species are those that are not native to the area and bring harm to those species and the ecosystem as a whole. For many, the idea of an invasive species is not unfamiliar. For the Eastern U.S., the spotted lanternfly is one such threat. New Yorkers learned that it is the duty of every good pedestrian to squash this pest on site. The fears brought up by their introduction, however, have not been realized. The initial concern was damage to grapes and to timber. It is hard not to notice that this fear is primarily centered upon human values. In this example the threat is entirely for how humans have set up the environment and how invasives could harm that structure. The protection of orchards is a massive political incentive to get the funding needed for a successful elimination campaign. Luckily, the impact has been minimal compared to estimates, as natural defenses of plants have kicked in to help. The use of pesticides and boots seems to keep populations at bay.

So what do we do? We need to change how we talk about invasives. Outside of academia, residents probably see invasives in public information campaign that has only one solution-kill on sight. This might be helpful for short notices going for one plan of action, yet is inadequate for the actual complexity. For researchers, the discussion moves forward on their evolution and integration, the public still views invasives as a new form of pest. Not every PSA should communicate as if the goal is to wipe out the invasives completely. We must also acknowledge a new approach that evolving invasives have brought: coexistence. In Spain, the American mink is able to coexist with the Eurasian Otter by feeding on different prey and living in different areas. In the U.S., crayfish from Ohio have been introduced since the 1960s to Wisconsin and Michigan. Management is able to focus on creating separate habitat zones to allow coexistence. The discussion must emphasize which populations need to be tapered down until they regain balance, not eradicated. This is the idea of “functional eradication” instead of complete. With management strategies of coexistence, “coexistence conservation” also becomes a possibility for the future. These potential policies reveal how invasives can help an ecosystem struggling with climate change. The researcher, Samual Case, observed that in Hawaii, non-native birds can become great dispersers of seeds. But wildlife managers have to be careful, as non-native plants must remain under control for this to work. In Japan, seaweed is able to act as a habitat for fish and invertebrates in areas where local species struggle. The resilience and numerical advantage of invasives could easily assist in filling niches in ecosystems that are not healthy. Invasives can therefore become the quick emergency support as nature’s crisis’ gets more dire. Plans can create balance in order to help invasives become safe for their new habitats. We no longer can continue only seeing them as a threat. Evolution of invasive species has already occurred and will continue. It is time to work within this new reality, and evolution could be a potent tool. Hopefully, through clearer public communication, such ideas are possible and will help shift the public’s understanding of what it means to manage invasives. No longer will they be kept in the dark about why some invasive species just don’t seem to leave.
